Are masks required for all attendees?
MDS will follow local health agency recommendations in place at the time of the meeting. We strongly encourage those who feel most comfortable wearing masks to keep theirs on.
Do I need a vaccine or negative COVID-19 test to attend the in-person meeting?
MDS is asking individuals registering for the in-person meeting to attest that they are able to enter Spain based on their current requirements. Individuals unable to make this attestation will be able to access all of the recorded sessions through the MDS Virtual Platform. View the virtual platform information.
What proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test is required to enter Spain?
Spain is currently requiring one of the following to enter the country:
- Be vaccinated with a World Health Organization (WHO) approved vaccination (The vaccination must be administered no later than 14 days prior to arrival. If you have received a vaccination before May of 2021, a booster shot needs to be completed in order to be eligible to travel to Spain.)
- Provide a negative COVID-19 test result (performed within 72 hours for a Nucleic Acid Amplification Test / 24 hours for a Rapid Antigen Test of arrival)
- Provide proof of recovery (i.e., your positive COVID-19 viral test result on a sample taken no more than 90 days before the flight’s departure from a foreign country and a letter from a licensed healthcare provider or a public health official stating that you were cleared to travel).

What safety protocols are being followed at the MDS International Congress in Madrid?
MDS will follow local health agency recommendations in place at the time of the meeting. Currently, hotel employees are required to wear face masks. Additionally, plexi-glass shields will be used for registrations and precautions will be taken when food and beverage is being served to manage crowding and lines. Social distancing and the use of hand sanitizer are highly recommended throughout the hotel.
Is there a virtual or hybrid option for the International Congress?
MDS will be recording all in-person Scientific Sessions which will be placed on the MDS Virtual Platform. In addition, the platform will feature a poster hall and exhibition hall. View the virtual platform information.
Are vaccinations required for hotel and meeting staff?
The MDS International Secretariat will be vaccinated. Currently, hotel staff is not required to have a vaccination but they are required to wear a mask.
Where can I get tested while I’m in Madrid?
There is a test center at the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport located in Terminal 2 and Terminal 4. Appointments are highly recommended (and cheaper), but not mandatory.
Within the city, there is Centro Médico Sanitas Valdebebas, which is a private clinic located in the Valdebebas neighbourhood about 10-15 minutes (north) by car/taxi from the Marriott. It is on the way from the hotel to the airport so that travellers can arrange for testing before they head to the airport.

What if an attendee, presenter, hotel or meeting staff tests positive for COVID-19?
MDS will assist the hotel and Madrid Health Services to notify individuals who have been in contact with anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 while attending the meeting or any functions.
What are the protocols for quarantine? Can I quarantine at the hotel?
Currently in Madrid, for anyone who tests positive for COVID-19, there is a mandatory 7-day quarantine. Any Marriott hotel guest can extend their stay at the conference rate to quarantine.
