Sleep and Circadian Rhythm Disorders in Movement Disorders: From Research to Clinical Practice

Tuesday, August 29, 2023
15:00 – 17:00

This session will discuss the diagnosis and management of common sleep and circadian rhythm disorders in patients with degenerative and non-degenerative movement disorders. Among them, RBD will be highlighted as a prodromal marker of synucleinopathies. There will also be information regarding the importance of assessing sleep-wake of the patients with Parkinson’s disease using subjective (e.g. sleep diary, questionnaire-based assessment) and objective (e.g. polysomnography, actigraphy) parameters that could predict motor and cognitive decline in Parkinson’s disease.

Chairs:
Espen Dietrichs, Norway
Horacio Kaufmann, USA

Sleep and Circadian Rhythm Dysfunction in Movement Disorders
Jirada Sringean, Thailand

RBD as a Prodromal Risk Factor of Synucleinopathies
Wolfgang Oertel, Germany

Sleep Parameters for Prediction of Motor and Cognitive Decline in Parkinson’s Disease
Ron Postuma, Canada

CSPC Liaison:
Carolyn Sue, Australia

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be better able to:

  1. Describe how to diagnose and manage common sleep and circadian rhythm disorders in patients with degenerative or non-degenerative movement disorders
  2. Explain the predictive value of RBD as a prodromal risk factor of synucleinopathies
  3. Identify the subjective and objective sleep parameters that could predict motor and cognitive decline in Parkinson’s disease

Recommended Audience:
Clinician, Researcher / Basic Scientist, Health Professional (non-physician), Fellow / Resident / Student, Industry
